As I understand it the law says that its ok to transfer music to other media (ie cd to tape if you only have a cassette player in your car) as long as only one copy is in use at any given time. The same principle applies to lending. You can lend someone a CD they didn't pay for but you can't make a copy, keep the original and then 'lend' them the copy.
