[SlugLUG] Goodbye dear sweet Sid. Hello Dapper Drake

Well, it's ironic that the problem I never really got nailed down after
installation is still the problem that finally convinced me to attempt
the move to a different distro.
I recently got a Gizmo VoIP line, and the Gizmo client didn't like to
play along with my cobbled together sound pipeline (3 sound daemons
wasn't enough apparently). So I've decided to attempt a transition to a
fresh clean Ubuntu install. My past experiences have been good, and I'm
comforted by the fact that Ubuntu is based on Debian.
Part of my choice was my lack of time since I started working 40-45
hours a week. (http://www.nakedsky.com if you're interested in seeing
where I work) I no longer have the time to be a hardcore system admin
anymore. I want something that will just work, and has lots of good
documentation. Hopefully I'll find that in Ubuntu.
I was also a little perturbed by the fact that I never did figure out
how to get my svnserve to start when the system started up, so after
months of it running continuously I rebooted and realized it was
gone.... so rather than figure out how I got it running in the first
place, I figured I'd just figure out how to get it started on system
startup in Ubuntu. (In hindsight, it's probably a good thing, since
while investigating a solution I found out that it might have been
running as root for months on end.)
I'm gonna throw Ubuntu on my 10 gig hard drive this weekend and see how
usable I can get it in a day. If Mr. Dapper is kind and friendly, he'll
likely convince me to visit Mr. Sid less and less often. My debian
install will be around for a good while on my 40 gig HD (I'll probably
be using the same /home), we'll see how much I use it.
Any advice or quick tips on the transition? (Things to do before,
during, and after the install?)
I'd be very interested in a checklist type guide for good things to do
on/with a new linux installation. (Or any individual suggestions you have).
Questing for the perfect OS,
EC
