After 4 years of Gentoo I made the switch to Ubuntu last month for
reasons similar to yours, and I've been quite happy.  There really
isn't much to it.  Keep your old harddisk accessible because it really
helps to just copy your old config files.  You'll probably want to run
something like Easybuntu to get some of the more obvious tweaks taken
care of for you.  Also check out http://ubuntuguide.org/wiki/Dapper.
