I guess $60k/year isn't that bad, considering the normal $10-15k a year
discount folks here are generally willing to take in return for not
having to go over the hill to work... but I pity anyone who is convinced
to relocate here without thorough advance investigation... that
$60k/year isn't going to go anywhere near as far as it could elsewhere.
I swear, when I saw the comic artist who draws this autobiographical
webcomic, "The Devil's Panties", write about how she was buying a
house... on the strength of a job as a retail clerk at a comic book
store and weekend gig's selling her comics at conventions, I nearly
choked. A house, for chrissakes, on what would barely rent half of a
shared room in a shared house, here.
Seems to me that Santa Cruz IT employers are cheap, but that, in
contrast, local companies and businessfolks are willing to pay a decent
rate, compared to the corporate monoliths over the hill, to contractors.
Does it make any sense that IBM is willing to pay less per hour than Joe
Blow consultant working out of his home?
