 I shall.

 That sounds really good.

Actually I just downloaded the installcd and livecd ISOs -
am awaiting time to do it, and knowing how to deal with various
issues.

The system currently runs FC1. It's set up to route between
2 LANS, runs djbdns for local DNS, has an Apache server using
PHP and Perl. I use GQView and GIMP and Imagemagick
for dealing with images. It's a Dell PowerEdge 400sc. It came
with a small diagnostic partition running Dell's software under
a stripped-down Windows 98. I installed W2K and FC1 on it
after I received it. My intention is to trash W2K and retain the
W98 and FC1 partitions - the former for Dell-specific hardware
maintenance and the latter for a backup until a more recent
OS is installed. The new OS will use the space now devoted
to WinDoze 2000. I suppose I can share the /boot partition
with the existing Linux, or chain load from one to the other.

One utility I rely on is a Gnome keyboard switcher, so I can
hotkey switch between US and German (or whatever) layouts.
Also this change will cause me to migrate completely to
UTF-8 on oll my Linux systems.

Also I have some MySQL databases I use.

The current boot scheme is rather baroque. For a multiple
NT-class-Windows / Linux boot scheme you can either use
the NT loader or GRUB as the primary loader. I chose the
first scheme, which is a little hairy - I saved the boot record
for the Linux install in a file on the C:\ drive (which is actually
a W98 partition, and after installin W2K set up c:\boot.ini
to load that when I choose Linux - then the GRUB selection
screen shows up. (I also have GRUB set up so I can go
back into the NT loader as one of the selections).

Naturally, I will use GRUB for everything for now on - keeping
in mind there's a W98 partition to select. I will probably migrate
to just a single Linux in the future, after everying I run now is
migrated to Gentoo (or whatever I actually select), and works
properly in my network.
