I'll track down that info.  I suspected the same things, but confirmed by
md5sum on the package and the binary that it was definitely from Deb.  
Dumbstruck, I did another apt-get with different sources in the hopes of it
being a fluke, but no such luck.

I will grant that the person in question was known for running software which
belonged in museums -- I had to push her off of 2.2, and recently 2.4.  I am
happy to report that she's finally come around to seeing it my way and does
nightly updates with semi-cautious upgrades.
