I don't know that book.  Here's a book that's available on-line or
in print, uses emacs for the ide, and steps you through building
some real programs (in CommonLisp).

I've heard good things about it, and have tried to work through it,
but get hung up on the learning emacs part, and the devoting time
to learning a language I'm not getting paid to use part.

I swear though I will one day.

PS  While CommonLisp is nearly as old as I am, I would argue that
it is relatively modern.
