Good to see someone recommending something other than depressing
factory-programming languages.  I'd suggest, for breadth of
experience, Scheme as a good example of functional programming.  (Yeah,
Erlang/Haskell would be more-pure examples, but less well developed, and
even more obscure.  Besides, there's the excellent tutorial _The Little
Schemer_ to recommend Scheme.)
