Hello there! Welcome to the group. There are meetings during the normal
school year, in the form of install fests usually, but I think you'll find
that mostly we just communicate via this mailing list. It's a place to
bounce problems around, as well as share tips and stories.
As for Solaris - you'll have no trouble finding a Solaris machine on campus
(as for why the school uses them, you'll have to ask someone else), but I
personally wouldn't look forward to the experience. The user interface is
clunky and nonfunctional, the kernel is stale, and administrating one is a
pain. I know from experience - I had one, and I switched it over to gentoo.
(You have to use a special version of lilo to do circumvent Sun's boot
loader and there are stiff restrictions on the kernel's size.)
Lastly, I'd also like to tell you ahead of time (since it took me a while to
figure it out), a fair portion of the users of this list are actually not
students. I believe we even have a few campus IT people writing here, I
think from ResNet.
Welcome, and enjoy the show! (The flame wars are wonderful, if infrequent.)
