Ask your typical Gentoo and your typical Ubuntu user about compilers sometime.
You'll find a very interesting differential.

Personally, I don't think Gentoo is any harder to use than any other distro,
but it encourages one to dig in.  Ubuntu does the opposite -- and tries
their hardest at it.

If you *really* want to learn though -- pick up Slackware.  I owe a great
debt to Pat for my technical expertise.
