I cannot possibly underscore Nacho's point here enough. Somewhere in the
archives is a brief description of Andrew Stitt, Chris Rauer, Daniel Walker,
and myself going around campus with a staple gun, a roll of tape, and stacks
of flyers printed out with the use of admin access on the printers at the
library.

As Andrew wrote about it later: "We put up a flyer on every flat surface we
could find -- and even some curved ones!"

In addition to this large-scale littering at the university's expense, I was
going up to anyone unfortunate enough to sit out studying or even walking by,
chatting with them, and passing out flyers like mad.

For a few glorious days on campus, you could not swing a stoned hippie without
hitting at least five Installfest signs. This won us no friends with the
facilities group -- but that's another story which shall be told at another
time. Suffice it to say that nothing but a few harsh words directed at my
person came of it.

Anyway, the result of all this -- apart from fond memories -- was the largest
installfest that I ever saw at UCSC. We had coverage from the Fish Rap. We
also had something like a 11:1 installee/installer ratio. As I recall, about
three people showed up to help install, and we accounted for something like 35
computers installed that day.

Good advertising, a regular meeting schedule, and frequent activity outside of
meetings are the key to SlugLUGs survival and success.

In other news, it's a point of interest to keep track of which distros are
installed and what sorts of computers they're installed on. Nacho and I
occasionally expressed remorse at having not kept records of the shrinking
desktop to laptop ratio.
