In case you're curious, recommended method would probably be something
like this:

[Fetch 2.6.16 and driver patch.  Apply patch.  make config or whatever.]
Then:  

$ fakeroot make-kpkg clean
$ fakeroot make-kpkg --append-to-version=.20070217 --revision=01 kernel_image
$ su -c dpkg -i kernel-image-2.6.16.20070217_01_i386.deb
